Apr 07, 2021
Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is one of the most common illnesses. The disease is often referred to as a silent killer and is more common amongst the elderly. Thus, it is extremely important for us to keep a strict eye on our parents and get them checked from time to time. Untreated high blood pressure can lead to bigger health issues. Here are 8 symptoms that your parents need to get their blood pressure checked.
Severe headache
Often taken lightly, headaches can be the first sign of high blood pressure. Too severe a headache can lead to migraine and cause a throbbing sensation on one side of the head, which can be a sign of high blood pressure.
Feeling lightheaded or dizzy
People suffering from high blood pressure may have a pounding feeling in their neck, chest and ears, which can give rise to the feeling of dizziness and lightheadedness.
Blood in the urine
Hematuria (blood in urine) is common in people with hypertension. A small amount of blood in the urine is called hematuria.
Nosebleed
The nose has delicate blood vessels and a sudden increase in blood pressure can lead to nosebleeds. Thus, hypertension is associated with bleeding of the nose.
Shortness of breath
People suffering from hypertension may experience irregular breathing and aching sensation in their chest that can make them feel uncomfortable. Shortness of breath is one of the initial signs of high blood pressure.
Vision problems
Hypertension can lead to hypertensive retinopathy in which a person can experience vision problems like blurred vision, loss of vision or visual impairment.
Facial flushing
Having blood spots in the eyes and facial flushing can occur when the blood vessels in the face dilate, which can be an indication of hypertension.
Fatigue
High blood pressure can make you feel tired as it consumes energy. It can make you feel anxious, dizzy and disrupt your sleep, which can make a person feel more fatigued.
